  “THE COLOR OF MONEY”
ANNUAL MEETING PROGRAMS

The safe way to double your money is to fold it over once and put it in your pocket.
     - Kin Hubbard

Inflation hasn’t ruined everything. A coin can still be used as a screwdriver.

     - H. Jackson Brown, Jr.

Business is the art of extracting money from another man’s pocket without resorting to violence.

     - Max Amsterdam

Finishing Green - Tackling Today’s Sustainability and Environmental Issues
Speaker: Jeff Peterson, Foil Stamping & Embossing Association
We already know that “time is money.” But in today’s eco-conscious business climate, “green is money” too. Environmental sustainability and responsibility can no longer be ignored for the companies in the converting industry to secure their future. This is the first of several sessions which will explore the necessary pathways to “finishing green” – featuring hot topics that must be addressed by our industry in order to move forward. What are the challenges of going green? What do customers want in today’s eco-friendly climate and what products are available? Learn and understand green terms such as greenwashing, carbon neutral and carbon footprint. How can you make responsible choices in your manufacturing processes, from choices in raw materials to shipping the final product. Learn the true stance on the recyclability of foiled paper and board and their effects on landfills – valuable information you will want to pass on to your customers. Jeff will also discuss the current projects in which the FSEA is involved related to sustainability and other environmental initiatives.

Sustainable Packaging
Speaker: Lynn Weatherly, Potlatch Forest Products Corporation
When you hear the words “sustainable packaging,” are you confused, concerned, and perhaps even a tad nervous? After all your years in the converting industry, does this new “sustainable” movement have you fearing that your company, career - and perhaps even the world - are coming to an apocalyptic end? This session will help you understand how the vision for environmental health is not at odds with your company’s economic health and that supporting innovative, functional packaging materials can be achieved through supply chain collaboration. Beginning with a “Forests are the Foundation” perspective, this session will also cover such areas as the “Wal-Mart scorecard” and other green initiatives.

Managing Stress
Speaker: Dr. Carolyn Cottrell, Webster University, Kansas City Metropolitan Campus
Being overstressed comes from two basic sources: the things we are doing, and doing too many things. In the first case, it may be that the issues themselves are very tough. In the second case, we may be trying to cram too much “stuff” into our lives. Most adults complain that they have too much to do and not enough time.

  • Do you get into trouble by saying “yes” when you’d like to say “no”?
  • Could it be some of your valuable time is wasted?
  • Would it help to know some stress-busting techniques?
This session will show you how dangerous stress is, help you identify your major stressors, and then offer ideas for decreasing stress and its bad effects.

Innovations in Green
Speakers: Gordon Coffey, Koskisen Inc.; Mike Porter, PSC Global; Ed Martin, Marco Die Supplies, Inc.
Can a dieboard be sustainable? Studies show that far too many businesses dump materials as waste, rather than treating them as a resource which can be re-used, recycled, or recovered. Using dieboard as an example, this session will explore how manufacturers and consumers are striving to reduce their carbon footprints and be environmentally supportive, while at the same time benefiting their businesses and the bottom line. Topics include the manufacture of dieboard from recycled products; reclaimable dieboard; utilizing a subsidiary energy company which crushes and burns dieboard (using the heat to produce electricity); and other ideas for dieboard re-use.

Feeling Cornered? It IS the Year of the Rat: Money Management During Tough Economic Times
Speaker: Dr. Chris Kuehl, Armada Corporate Intelligence
The financial press is alive with assertions that the economy is in dire straits; but at the same time, there are obvious exceptions to the rule. The question for business is what is really going on, and what will be happening months from now? This session explores some of the most important issues in the industry—commodity prices, inflation, dollar weakness, interest rates and overall prospects for economic growth. At the same time, we will poke some holes in the media-fueled hysteria over the status of the economy. We’ll highlight the five trends you should watch, global developments (including China, Europe, Canada, Latin America, India, Asia, and the U.S.), and technology trends and their impact on the economy.

Setting Yourself Up for Success-ion
Speaker: Jonathan Butters, M & I Bank
You plan for today and you plan for tomorrow, but what about 5 years from now, 10 years, 20? What will happen to your business or yourself when you no longer sit in the corner office? Do you have a contingency plan in place if this Global Economy really turns sour? Financial planning is more than grocery budgets and IRAs. Join us as we discuss how your business’s liquidity and cash flow affect the value of your company and how asset management and succession planning can ensure your Golden Years are truly spent in the sun.

Equipment Diversity Training - New Uses for Old Things
Moderator: Tommy Moore, Stafford Cutting Dies
When times are tough, business is slow, and money is in short supply, creative business owners and employees invent new ways to use their existing equipment, tools and supplies to tap into other markets and to offer new products and services. This interactive session will provide you with practical ways to get more out of what you have now. You’ll be amazed at the unique ventures undertaken by members of our industry.

What Is It Really Costing?

Protecting Your Company While Doing Business With Bankrupt Customers
Speaker: Virtual Seminar - Handouts Only
These can be tough times for smaller companies, and tougher yet when you have to take the fall for your client’s or vender’s bankruptcy. Courts are overflowing with filings of bankruptcy and debtors filing suits against the folks who are running behind in payments due. There are ways that a you can protect your business, both as a creditor and a debtor. Running and owning a business is about making a living both for the entrepreneur and their employees. In addition, each time a business is forced to shut down, it has an effect on the stability and viability of the community. Each owner must do everything possible to protect his or her company. The strength of our economy is in the hands of healthy enterprise. As a bonus for registering for the Annual Meeting, we will provide you with handouts that provide steps to take now to insulate yourself against another’s bankruptcy, whether a customer, distributor, or supplier. You will also learn specific ways a company can react once a partner has declared bankruptcy.
